With 2017 in our rearview mirror, many might wonder what color represents this brand new year. Of course these might be dark and trying times for some, and their response might be that 2018 could be best represented by the color gray, aggressive red or maybe even dark and dreary black. Any of these could be a good match for the different shades of the population’s mood.
The color experts at Pantone thought otherwise. They sent a handful of people around the world for several weeks last year, looking for color signals in their surroundings, from cars to clothes, to food and cosmetics. After putting together their findings, their analysis pointed to one color that is said to shape the coming year: Ultra Violet.
This color is many things to many people, and has been used in the world of film, health, art, and even activism. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of Pantone, explains that the color “communicates originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking.” With all our creative visionaries who wear the shade of purple in their most creative times, such as Wagner, Frank Lloyd Wright, and–who could forget–Prince, it’s not a surprising decision in the least.
Much can be said about the color’s complexity, since you take two shades that seem to be complete opposites, red and blue, and bringing them together to create an entirely new shade. Is it an optimistic shade that leans toward wishful thinking than actual reality? That may be so, but that is definitely part of the point. It is a reflection of what our world needs, not necessarily what we currently have. And optimism is a trait that everyone should adopt in their daily lives, regardless of the year.
The past colors of the year tended to be more reflective, with both rose quartz and serenity in 2016 representing our increasingly gender-fluid age, and with greenery in 2017 acknowledging springtime and new beginnings. For 2018, a color such as Ultra Violet was chosen because as Eiseman said, “We wanted to pick something that brings hope and an uplifting message.”
As the popular motto goes, “If you build it, he will come.” With this hopeful shade, Pantone puts forward the idea that the clothes we wear, the belongings we use, and even the food we eat can lead to solutions and a better year ahead. It’s an ambitious but ultimately uplifting mindset. Get ready, this purple reign will help make this year better than the last!
